The great sites, with the visit each one actually takes

Most heritage disappointment is an expectation problem: the right site at the wrong hour, without the audio guide that makes it speak. These cards set the honest shape of each visit, drawn from what thousands of visitor reviews praise and criticise. Ticket prices appear only where the site's own official page states them, with the check date.

Hoa Lo Prison: go at opening, rent the audio guide

Allow one to two hours. Reviewers are blunt that the audio guide transforms this visit from labels to story, and the narrow corridors crowd fast with school groups, so the first hour of the day is the calm one. The current ticket is 50,000 VND, confirmed on the official site, hoalo.vn, when checked on 1 November 2026.

Temple of Literature: a garden that happens to be a university

About ninety minutes, early or late in the day for the light and the calm. Founded in 1070, this is a sequence of courtyards and gardens rather than a single temple, and it rewards slowness: the stone stelae of the doctors are the heart of it.

Imperial Citadel of Thang Long: history park, not a palace

Set expectations before you go: gates, foundations, excavations and the D67 bunker, with little signage, inside a UNESCO listed site recognised in 2010. History keen visitors rate it; anyone expecting a standing palace should skip it on a one day trip and take the Temple of Literature instead.

Vietnamese Women's Museum: the quiet overachiever

About two and a half hours with the audio guide, half that without. Consistently among the best reviewed museums in the city for the quality of its English interpretation, and an easy walk south of the lake.

Museum of Ethnology: a half day, outside the Quarter

The full size traditional houses in the garden are the standout of any Hanoi museum day. It sits outside the Old Quarter, so give it a half day, eat beforehand, and pair it with nothing more ambitious than a cafe afterwards.

Ngoc Son Temple: thirty good minutes on the lake

Thirty to forty five minutes, and the reward is The Huc Bridge and the lake setting as much as the temple itself. Add it to a dawn or dusk lake walk; do not build a half day around it, and keep a hand on your phone in the crowds at the bridge.

Dress and cash notes

Temples and mausoleum adjacent sites expect covered shoulders and knees; carry a light layer rather than arguing at a gate. Entry is cheap everywhere and cash is the safe assumption at ticket windows. Our note on Cultural Heritage Day, 23 November is a good day to aim for, and the month by month heritage calendar sits in the journal.
